Kitchen Renovation · Refresh vs Refit

Kitchen Renovation Costs Ireland

Compare a targeted cabinet refresh with a complete kitchen replacement and build a specification around the result your home needs.

Practical Irish Homeowner Guide

A refresh and a complete replacement are different briefs. Define what can stay, what must change and which supporting trades are included.

Compare the cost of achieving the result you need—not simply an old kitchen with a new one.

Before asking how much a kitchen renovation costs, decide which problem you need to solve.

Is the kitchen well laid out but looking tired? Or are the cabinets damaged, the storage inadequate and the working arrangement unsuitable?

Those are different briefs. A refresh concentrates on what you can retain. A complete replacement gives you an opportunity to reconsider the room—but requires a much wider specification.

The right comparison is not “old kitchen versus new kitchen”. It is the cost of achieving the result you need.

How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Ireland?

Published Irish guidance illustrates the gap between a cosmetic treatment and a wider renovation.

A specialist kitchen-respray provider publishes guide prices of approximately €700–€3,000, depending on the kitchen. Trade Source IRE’s broader builder guide gives an indicative €13,000–€27,000 or more, excluding VAT, for a kitchen fit-out. Neither figure should be treated as a universal package price.

Approach What the price needs to describe
Cabinet respray The number of doors, drawers and panels; preparation; finish; removal and refitting. Confirm VAT.
Broader kitchen refresh Every retained and replaced item, including worktops, handles, appliances and associated trade work.
Complete kitchen replacement Cabinetry, fitting, worktops, services, appliances, finishes and any building work, with exclusions clearly stated.

A respray figure is not the price of a complete makeover. Equally, a fitted-kitchen quotation may not be the total cost of renovating the room.

When is a kitchen refresh worth considering?

A refresh is worth pricing when you are broadly happy with the layout and want to assess whether the existing cabinets are suitable to retain.

Ask the contractor to inspect the doors, hinges, drawer mechanisms and cabinet bodies. Have any damage or unsuitable surfaces identified before choosing a finish.

Preparation and the number and condition of the components affect a professional respray quotation. Published contractor guidance also distinguishes between door materials and finishes rather than treating every kitchen as the same job.

For a wider refresh, write down exactly what is changing. New handles and paint are one scope; new worktops, a sink, splashback and lighting are another.

An illustrative €4,000 kitchen-refresh budget

The following example shows how several smaller decisions can combine. It is a hypothetical allocation, not a contractor quotation. Assumed figures include VAT where applicable.

Item Illustrative allowance
Cabinet refinishing €1,500
Handles and minor hardware €200
Replacement worktop and fitting €1,200
Plumbing reconnection €400
Decoration €400
Contingency €300
Total €4,000

This example assumes suitable existing cabinets and no layout change. It does not include appliances, new flooring, electrical alterations or structural work.

Use it as a budgeting format: replace every allowance with an actual specification and written price.

When should you price a complete replacement?

Consider a complete-replacement brief when retaining the existing arrangement would leave the main problems unresolved.

Perhaps you need different storage, more usable worktop space or a layout that better suits cooking and dining. Ask a designer or fitter to test those requirements before you commit to cabinetry.

List your priorities in order. It is easier to assess an optional feature when you know whether your main goal is storage, accessibility, appearance or a change in how the room functions.

What should a complete kitchen quotation include?

Request a room-by-room—or item-by-item—scope rather than relying on “supply and fit”.

Identify the removal of the old kitchen, waste disposal, cabinetry, worktops, appliances, plumbing, electrical work, plastering, flooring, splashback and decoration.

Then establish who coordinates the separate trades. Ask when measurements are finalised, when products must be available and which decisions you must make before installation begins.

For a tiled floor or splashback, include the tile specification and preparation in the brief. You can enquire about that element through our tiling contractors page.

How to keep control of the kitchen budget

Compare quotations against one agreed design.

Changing appliance models, worktop materials or cabinet arrangements after ordering can create a new scope, so ask for the cost consequences before approving changes.

Separate essential work from optional purchases. Keep the electrical, plumbing and installation specification intact while reviewing decorative choices against your budget.

Also plan how you will manage without the kitchen during the work. Ask the contractor which facilities will remain available and when, rather than assuming every stage will happen in a single visit.

Kitchen renovation FAQs

Can I replace the doors but keep the cabinets?

Ask a fitter to check cabinet condition, door dimensions, hinges and compatibility before ordering. Request a price for all visible components, not only the doors.

Does a new-kitchen quote include appliances?

Only the written specification can answer that. Have each appliance listed by model or clearly identified allowance.

Is a kitchen refresh always the better-value choice?

No single answer fits every project. Compare the cost of a refresh against the problems it would leave unresolved. Paying less is not useful when the resulting kitchen still does not meet your needs.
