€2,000 Boiler Scrappage Scheme Ireland: Grants, Eligibility and Your Heating Upgrade — Trade Source IRE guide
The €2,000 grant supports qualifying switches to renewable heating, subject to SEAI eligibility.

Thinking about replacing an old oil or gas boiler? Ireland’s newly announced €2,000 boiler scrappage support could be relevant to your plans—but it is important to understand what the funding is actually for.

The support is intended to help owners of qualifying homes move away from fossil-fuel heating towards heat pumps or other renewable heating systems. It is not a general €2,000 grant for fitting another oil or gas boiler. The Government’s published outline identifies houses built before 2021. Official source

Before choosing an installer, there are three questions to answer: does your project qualify, is your home suitable for the proposed system, and what will the complete upgrade cost?

At Trade Source Ireland, we help homeowners find potentially suitable tradesmen for heating, plumbing, electrical and insulation projects. It is free to enquire, with no obligation to proceed. Trade Source IRE

What is the €2,000 boiler scrappage scheme?

The boiler scrappage support was announced in September 2026 as an additional contribution towards replacing fossil-fuel heating with a qualifying renewable alternative. Its purpose is to support a change in heating technology—not simply the removal of an old appliance. Official source

That distinction matters when comparing boiler replacement grants in Ireland.

Replacing an old oil boiler with a newer oil boiler is different from replacing oil heating with a heat pump. SEAI’s existing guidance states that it does not provide grants for new or replacement fossil-fuel boilers, including gas and oil boilers. Official source

For a broader overview of the different upgrade options, read our SEAI Grants Ireland guide.

When does the boiler scrappage scheme start?

The position needs to be checked carefully while the new support is being introduced.

SEAI’s current heat-pump grant page now describes how to claim the bundle through its online application wizard by selecting “Heat Pump System”. Eligible homeowners with a heat-pump grant application already in progress can also receive the additional support, subject to meeting the relevant conditions. Official source

For an existing application, ask SEAI or your registered provider to confirm how the uplift applies. New applicants can review the current online application steps with SEAI before committing to work.

Do not assume that a headline launch date guarantees eligibility for your particular home.

Who could qualify?

SEAI’s individual heat-pump grant requires a home with an MPRN that was built and occupied before 2021. Its scrappage component can apply when an oil or gas boiler, electric storage heating or a solid-fuel system is removed as part of a qualifying heat-pump installation; SEAI also lists homeowners without central heating where a heat pump is installed. Check the full conditions for your project. Official source

For the established individual heat-pump grant, SEAI identifies eligible property-owner categories including owner-occupiers, landlords, companies, charities and approved housing bodies. The home must have an MPRN, the electricity connection reference, and must have been built and occupied before 2021. Official source

These existing heat-pump conditions should not be confused with a guarantee that every applicant receives the new scrappage payment.

When making an enquiry, have the following information ready: your property’s approximate age, current heating fuel, any existing grant application reference, and your latest BER information.

Do not rely on an advertisement saying that every boiler over a particular age automatically qualifies. The announcement said further eligibility details would follow, so any boiler-age requirement needs official confirmation. Official source

Can the €2,000 be combined with heat-pump grants?

SEAI’s current heat-pump grant page shows potential support of up to €14,500 for eligible houses with qualifying water-based systems, and lower maximums for some other dwellings and systems. The bundle can comprise the following components: Official source

Support componentPublished amount
Heat-pump systemUp to €10,500
Necessary central-heating upgradesUp to €2,000
Fossil-fuel boiler scrappage support€2,000
Potential combined headline supportUp to €14,500

The heat-pump unit grant, central-heating upgrade support where needed and scrappage payment each have eligibility conditions. The maximum for eligible apartments and air-to-air systems differs from the house figure; not every project receives the maximum. Official source

Confirm the amount offered for your project in writing. SEAI states that the grant payment cannot exceed the total cost of works. Official source

Our heat pumps in Ireland guide explains the technology and the wider planning considerations.

Is your home ready to replace its boiler with a heat pump?

A grant is only one part of the decision. Your home also needs to suit the heating system being proposed.

SEAI explains that heat pumps perform best in well-insulated homes. Where a property loses less heat, the system needs less energy to maintain a comfortable temperature. Older homes may need improvements before installation. Official source

Check insulation and heat loss first

Under SEAI’s current guidance, homes built before 2007 may require a technical assessment before applying for a heat-pump grant. An exception can apply where a valid BER demonstrates the required heat-loss standard. Homes built from 2007 onwards generally follow a different assessment route. Official source

The practical starting point is to establish what your property needs—not to assume that every older house requires the same package of work.

Our BER rating guide explains the assessment in more detail. Where insulation work is recommended, you can also request insulation contractors through Trade Source Ireland.

Check the radiators, cylinder and system design

Installing a heat pump does not automatically mean installing underfloor heating throughout the house. Heat pumps can work with radiators or underfloor heating, provided the system is suitable. Official source

SEAI advises that the design should calculate the heating requirement of each room. That assessment helps determine the heat-pump size and whether existing radiators need changing. Space for the outdoor unit and hot-water cylinder also needs consideration. Official source

Ask the installer to explain the design, rather than simply quoting for a replacement appliance.

How much will the heating upgrade cost after grants?

There is no single price that fits every Irish home. A heat-pump project can involve different combinations of equipment, radiator changes, pipework, a cylinder, electrical work, insulation and installation requirements. Our heat-pump guide outlines these cost factors. Trade Source IRE

When comparing quotations, ask each contractor to price the same scope. A useful quotation checklist is:

AreaWhat to ask
Equipment and designWhich system is proposed, and what assessment supports its size?
Associated workAre radiator changes, cylinder, pipework and electrical work included?
Removal and completionAre decommissioning, removal, making good and commissioning included?
Price and aftercareDoes the price include VAT, confirmed grants, warranties and servicing arrangements?

SEAI recommends obtaining quotations and references from more than one installer, and discussing commissioning, controls, warranties and after-sales support. Official source

For preliminary budgeting around associated plumbing work, see our Plumber Costs Ireland guide.

Our advice: compare the complete installed project, not just the advertised “price after grants”. Ask the contractor to show the gross price, each proposed grant deduction and any excluded work separately.

How to approach a grant-supported heating upgrade

The following is a planning sequence for a heat-pump project, rather than a substitute for the final scrappage-scheme instructions.

First, establish suitability. Gather your BER information and arrange any required technical assessment. This should help identify whether insulation or other preparation is needed. Official source

Next, obtain written quotations from appropriately registered contractors. Check registration for the exact grant-supported measure, rather than assuming registration for one type of work covers everything. Official source

Then confirm the grant and accept the offer before work begins. SEAI’s individual-grant guidance says applicants must apply and accept the offer before starting. It also explains the information required, including the property’s MPRN, dwelling type, construction year and contractor details. Official source

Finally, plan the installation and completion paperwork. Agree the heating interruption with your installer. After installation, have the controls explained, retain the documentation and complete the required post-works BER and grant-claim process. A registered One Stop Shop can manage a wider upgrade and its paperwork under the relevant scheme. Official source

Frequently asked questions

Can I get €2,000 for replacing my boiler with another oil or gas boiler?

That is not the purpose of the announced support. It is intended to support switching from fossil-fuel heating to heat pumps or other renewable heating systems—not a like-for-like fossil-fuel boiler replacement. Official source

Can a heat pump work in an older Irish house?

Yes, but suitability needs assessment. The insulation, heat loss and heating-system design matter more than the age of the property alone. An older home may need preparation before the installation can meet the relevant requirements. Official source

Will I definitely save money on heating?

Do not treat savings as guaranteed. Running costs depend on the property, system design, electricity tariff and how the heating is used. Compare the expected total heating and hot-water costs, rather than electricity bills alone. Our heat-pump guide discusses these considerations. Trade Source IRE

Can landlords apply?

Landlords are among the eligible applicant categories for SEAI’s established heat-pump grant. Whether a particular rental property receives the additional scrappage support must be confirmed against the applicable conditions. Official source

Can Trade Source Ireland apply for the grant for me?

Our role is to help source potentially suitable trade professionals. The grant application must follow the relevant SEAI process, whether managed by you or through an authorised provider. We do not replace SEAI’s eligibility checks. Trade Source IRE
